Pune Ganesh Visarjan 2025: Noise Monitoring By MPCB Reveals Mixed Trends
Pune, September 7, 2025 — The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has released preliminary findings from its noise monitoring drive across 200 Ganesh pandals in Pune, showing mixed trends in this year’s festival. While several locations reported a decline in sound levels compared to 2024, others exceeded permissible limits.
The monitoring, conducted between August 27 and September 2, highlighted both improvements and areas of concern. For instance, at Tatyaba Sadhujui Gaikwad Road near Jaglimaharaj Chowk in Shivajinagar, the average noise level (Leq) dropped from 74.5 dB on August 27 to 71.1 dB the following day. In contrast, Utkarsh Mitra Mandal on Jangali Maharaj Road recorded 87.7 dB on August 28, while Akhil Yashwantrao Chavan Nagar Mitra Mandal in Sahakarnagar reported a peak of 93.4 dB on September 1.
For comparison, Pune’s highest noise level during the 2024 Ganesh Festival reached 99.8 dB on September 17, the main visarjan day.
MPCB officials stressed that the monitoring is not limited to enforcement but aims to raise awareness about noise pollution during festivities. “The focus is on encouraging citizens and mandals to celebrate responsibly while staying within environmental limits,” an official said.
A comparative review of data from 15 major traffic junctions also revealed contrasting patterns. Rishi Chowk on Aundh-Wakad Road recorded the most significant reduction, with daytime levels falling by over 11 dB. Juna Bazar Chowk saw a night-time drop of more than 6 dB. However, Sonya Maruti Chowk in Raviwar Peth reported a daytime spike of over 11 dB, while Sant Kabir Chowk and Laxmi Nagar Chowk showed smaller increases.
The MPCB noted that such mixed results highlight the need for continued awareness campaigns and stricter adherence to noise regulations to strike a balance between tradition and environmental responsibility.
