Pune, August 6, 2025 – Ahead of Ganesh Visarjan 2025, over 70 Ganesh mandals from Pune have submitted a request to Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar seeking permission to participate in the immersion procession before the five honoured Ganpati idols. The suggestion, if implemented, could bring significant changes to the city’s traditional Visarjan route and schedule.

In a meeting held at the Pune Police Commissionerate on Tuesday, mandal representatives also proposed that each Ganesh mandal be allowed only one dhol-tasha troupe to avoid delays and congestion. Present at the meeting were Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner Ranjankumar Sharma, and other senior officers.

Currently, the immersion procession on Laxmi Road begins only after the five honoured Ganpatis complete their rituals, which often extends late into the evening. The remaining mandals – over 70 of them – then have to complete their immersion within a much shorter time frame. To address this, mandals suggested either allowing others to begin their immersion earlier or starting the honoured Ganpatis’ procession at 7 AM.

The proposal of “one mandal, one dhol-tasha troupe” was also tabled to streamline the flow of the procession and reduce logistical issues. Mandal representatives believe these changes would ensure a smoother, more efficient immersion.

Commissioner Kumar assured that no mandal is treated preferentially or unfairly and that every mandal plays a vital role in Pune’s Ganeshotsav. He said all suggestions would be considered, and discussions will be held to reach a consensus acceptable to all.

However, disagreements between the five honoured mandals and the other 70+ mandals regarding procession timing and participation order remain unresolved, posing a coordination challenge for city police. The final decision is expected later this week.
