Pune, June 14, 2025: Over 1,000 residents of the Saarthii Sovereign Co-operative Housing Society in Hinjewadi Phase 2, Marunji road have appealed to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), demanding immediate intervention to restore their only access road, which has been rendered unusable following the collapse caused by a major sinkhole.

In a formal complaint submitted on June 11, the housing society pointed out that the approach road—vital for over 250 flats—has been in a worsening state for years, plagued by deep potholes, poor drainage, and lack of lighting. The recent sinkhole incident has completely cut off road access, leaving the community stranded and prompting a call for urgent action.

According to the letter addressed to PMRDA officials, the poor condition of the road poses serious threats to safety and daily living. Among the key concerns highlighted:

  • Emergency Services Obstructed: Ambulances and fire services cannot reach the premises, putting lives at risk.
  • Daily Life Disrupted: Commuters, including students and senior citizens, face extreme difficulty accessing schools, hospitals, and workplaces.
  • Security Risks: Poor lighting and deteriorated road surfaces create a hazardous environment.
  • Dumping of Debris: Construction waste dumped on both sides of the road adds to the danger and blocks visibility.

The residents have urged PMRDA to take the following steps:

  1. Immediate clearance of the blockage and restoration of access.
  2. Permanent road repairs including repaving and installation of streetlights.
  3. Appointment of a dedicated contact officer for updates and transparency.
  4. Provision of a temporary alternate road for daily commuting.

Society secretary Sandeep Pednekar, who signed the representation, stated that the matter is of critical importance and affects the daily lives and safety of the entire community. Residents await a timely response and resolution from the concerned authorities.

Another resident of the society said that this access road will not just our society but will connect many societies ahead of us. More than 10,000 families will be benefited by this road and hence we approached the PMRDA for a permanent solution.

Pune Pulse spoke to Rinaj Pathan, chief engineer, PMRDA said that the acquisition may take time but at this moment we are working out on a temporary solution to provide some relief to the residents. Long term solution is also on the cards after discussing with relevant authorities involved in this particular road.

The residents hope that PMRDA will address the issue promptly and implement a long-term solution.
