Pune Hospitals Report Sharp Surge in Childhood Pneumonia Cases; RSV Virus and Monsoon Conditions Worsen Respiratory Illnesses
Pune hospitals are reporting a sharp rise in pneumonia cases among children in the weeks following the Ganesh festival, raising concerns among doctors and parents. The spike is linked to large festive gatherings, processions, and seasonal factors such as monsoon-related infections and deteriorating air quality.
Pediatric departments in major government hospitals have noted that daily respiratory infection cases among children have nearly doubled, and in some instances, even tripled. Medical experts point to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) as a key contributor — a highly contagious virus that can cause fever, persistent cough, cold, and difficulty breathing in children under five. Severe RSV infections may lead to lung complications requiring oxygen support.
At Kamla Nehru Hospital, pediatric patient numbers have surged from an average of 70–80 children per day to nearly 100–150. “Many children present with mild symptoms that respond to antibiotics and rest,” said Dr. Smita Sangade, head of pediatrics. “However, there’s a worrying increase in severe cases requiring oxygen support.” The hospital has had to refer some patients to other facilities due to limited oxygen bed availability.
Sasoon Hospital is witnessing a similar trend. Dr. Aarti Kinikar, head of pediatrics, noted that while post-festival respiratory illnesses are common, this year’s RSV cases are unusually high.
Parents are urged to monitor children for early signs of infection, including:
- Fever
- Persistent cough
- Chills
- Rapid or labored breathing
- Poor feeding in infants
Doctors stress the importance of early medical attention to prevent complications. Preventive measures include:
- Keeping children away from sick individuals
- Maintaining proper hand hygiene and cleanliness
- Staying updated with routine vaccinations, including the annual flu shot
- Encouraging school-going children to wear masks in crowded places
While festivals foster joy and community bonding, doctors emphasize that families must take precautions to protect young children, whose immune systems remain vulnerable.
