The Ministry of Earth Sciences is set to launch the Bharat Forecast System (BFS) today — a high-resolution, indigenously developed global weather forecasting model that promises to significantly enhance prediction accuracy.

Developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, the BFS will be officially unveiled by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh today. This advanced model will replace the earlier Global Forecast System (GFS) which operated at a 12-kilometre resolution.

In a major leap, the Bharat Forecast System offers a much finer resolution of 6 kilometres. This upgrade is expected to dramatically improve the precision of localised forecasts, including heavy rainfall alerts and cyclone tracking, which are crucial for disaster preparedness.

The BFS is also designed for international collaboration, with open data access for global researchers.

It is being developed in partnership with key agencies such as ISRO and the UK Met Office, marking a significant milestone in India’s scientific capabilities in meteorology.
