Pune: Illegal Tree Cutting In NIBM Annexe Sparks Demand For FIR
Pune, March 11, 2025: A complaint has been filed with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) regarding the illegal felling of two fully grown trees near Axis Bank ATM at S M Ghule Chowk in the NIBM Annexe Mohammadwadi area. BJP member and social activist Jaymala Dhankikar has urged the PMC Commissioner to take immediate action and register an FIR against those responsible.
In the complaint, Dhankikar cited violations of several environmental laws, including:
- The Indian Forest Act, 1927 – Restricts unauthorized tree felling.
- The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 – Prohibits environmentally harmful activities.
- The Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975 – Regulates tree cutting in urban areas.
- Section 430 of the Indian Penal Code – Addresses damage to natural resources.
The complaint demands that PMC directs the police to register an FIR, conducts an investigation to identify those involved, and takes disciplinary action against any negligent officials. Environmental activists have also called for stricter enforcement of tree protection laws to prevent such incidents in the future.
