Pune: Inner Ring Road Project Gains Momentum: PMRDA Initiates Land Acquisition And Tender Process

Maharashtra Directs PMRDA To Draft Plans for Eight New Town Planning Schemes Along Pune Ring Road
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has made significant strides in pushing forward the long-delayed inner ring road project by allocating funds in its 2024-25 budget. This allocation has enabled the authority to kick-start both the land acquisition and tender processes for the initial phases of the project.
This will accelerate the progress of the project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Pune city.
The simultaneous land acquisition and tender efforts are focused on the Solu Interchange-Vadgaon Shinde stretch and the Ahmednagar Road-Solapur Road-Satara Road stretch. However, Bhalkar cautioned that the land acquisition process is complex and could take more than six months before actual construction begins.
Originally proposed in 2016, the ring road project was handed to PMRDA by the Maharashtra government with the goal of diverting heavy vehicular traffic away from Pune’s congested core. Additionally, the project is expected to stimulate the development of suburban areas by improving connectivity to the city’s main roads.
Spanning 128.08 km, the inner ring road will be developed in four phases. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will handle 40 km of the road, while the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will develop another 6 km. PMRDA will oversee the construction of the remaining 83 km, ensuring a 65-meter wide road that will help reduce traffic congestion.
The four development phases include:
- 1. Solu Interchange-Vadgaon Shinde (4.7 km)
- 2. Pune-Ahmednagar Road to Solapur Road (71.89 km)
- 3. Pune-Solapur Road to Pune-Satara Road (21.23 km)
- 4. Pune-Satara Road to Parandwadi Interchange (44.80 km)
