Kamala Nehru Hospital, the site of Maharashtra’s inaugural model immunisation centre, set to improve vaccine access and experience.

PUNE, April 26, 2024 – Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the launch of the first model immunisation centre (MIC) in Maharashtra, which will be established at Kamala Nehru Hospital (KNH). Scheduled to open next month, this centre aims to enhance vaccine accessibility and efficiency for Pune’s residents.

The MIC is part of the Momentum Routine Immunisation Transformation and Equity (MRITE) initiative, a collaborative effort funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and partnered with Saathi. This initiative supported immunisation efforts across 19 districts in Maharashtra during the COVID-19 pandemic and now focuses on bolstering urban immunisation strategies in Pune.

Dr Bhagwan Pawar, a health officer at PMC, highlighted the centre’s innovative design. “The MIC will feature structural realignment to streamline patient flow, with dedicated areas for different stages of the vaccination process, play zones, and breastfeeding areas, enhancing the overall experience,” he explained.

The centre aims to make the vaccination process more child-friendly and comforting, helping to establish a positive perception of vaccination among young children. It will provide vital vaccination information and follow-up care tailored to different ages. Additionally, the MIC will implement a ‘beneficiary experience exit interview’ to maintain high standards of care and gather feedback for continuous improvement.

Dr Rajesh Dighe, PMC’s city immunisation officer, provided insights into the city’s current immunisation achievements. “PMC has successfully immunised 100% of children up to nine months old and 95% up to eighteen months. A dedicated committee will oversee the MIC, ensuring its smooth operation and efficacy through regular reviews and reports,” said Dr. Dighe.

The centre is set to follow the national immunisation schedule meticulously, with a focus on respectful service delivery. Special efforts will also be made to mobilise community resources to extend vaccine coverage among the city’s vulnerable groups, ensuring no one is left behind in the health safety net.
