Pune : The residents of Kalyani Nagar are facing inconvenience and have raised concerns over the safety of pedestrians in the area. The issue at hand pertains to the parking of two-wheelers on footpaths, which has unfortunately become a common practice among riders near Yes Bank and Lexicon School in Kalyani Nagar, Pune.

The problem arises when these bikes are parked on the footpaths, obstructing the path for pedestrians, particularly elderly citizens, children, and individuals with disabilities. This creates difficulties for them to navigate through the narrow spaces between the parked bikes and the buildings, leading to potential accidents or falls.

Furthermore, it also compels pedestrians to walk onto the road, which can be perilous, particularly during peak hours when traffic is heavy. This issue not only causes inconvenience but also gives rise to several other problems, including safety hazards, accessibility issues, congestion, visual pollution, and a lack of enforcement. Parking two-wheelers on footpaths increases the risk of accidents, as pedestrians may trip over the bikes or fall while attempting to maneuver around them.

Additionally, the presence of parked bikes on footpaths hinders the movement of people with disabilities, who may rely on wheelchairs or have mobility issues. The blocked footpaths can also cause congestion on the roads, as pedestrians are forced to walk on the streets instead of utilizing the designated footpaths. Moreover, the scattered bikes on footpaths create an unsightly environment and contribute to visual pollution. Lastly, the lack of strict regulations and enforcement encourages more people to park their bikes on footpaths, exacerbating the situation. It is imperative that measures be taken to address this issue promptly and effectively.

Strict regulations and enforcement should be implemented to discourage the parking of two-wheelers on footpaths. Additionally, public awareness campaigns can be conducted to educate residents about the importance of keeping footpaths clear for pedestrians. By doing so, we can ensure the safety and convenience of all individuals in our community.

This issue not only causes inconvenience but also gives rise to several other problems, including safety hazards, accessibility issues, congestion, visual pollution, and a lack of enforcement. Firstly, parking two-wheelers on footpaths increases the risk of accidents as pedestrians may trip over the bikes or fall while trying to navigate around them, posing a safety hazard.

Secondly, the presence of parked bikes on footpaths hinders the movement of people with disabilities, who may rely on wheelchairs or have mobility issues, thereby creating accessibility issues. Furthermore, the blocked footpaths can cause congestion on the roads as pedestrians are forced to walk on the streets instead of using the designated footpaths, exacerbating the problem.

In addition, the scattered bikes on footpaths create an unsightly environment and contribute to visual pollution, detracting from the overall aesthetics of the area. Moreover, the lack of strict regulations and enforcement encourages more people to park their bikes on footpaths, worsening the situation. To address this issue effectively, we suggest implementing the following necessary actions:

Firstly, it is crucial to install clear signage indicating that parking on footpaths is strictly prohibited. Additionally, the installation of barriers or bollards should be considered to prevent bikes from entering the footpaths.

Secondly, launching public awareness programmes to educate riders about the consequences of parking on footpaths and promoting responsible parking practices is essential. Increasing awareness among the community will help reduce the occurrence of this issue.

Lastly, imposing fines or penalties on those found parking their bikes on footpaths will serve as a deterrent and discourage others from engaging in such behaviour. Strict enforcement of penalties is necessary to ensure compliance with the regulations.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Nidhi Bindal added, ”Inconvenience is caused to pedestrians walking as they have to walk on the road because of vehicles parked on footpaths. School-going children are seen walking on the road after school, posing a threat to life. We urge strict action to be taken in this case.”

Another resident, Harsh Bharwani added, ”Senior citizens are forced to walk on the roads as vehicles are parked on footpaths. In the evening, it becomes even more difficult to walk around due to traffic congestion. Action should be taken against people who violate parking norms.”

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Shailesh Sankhe, Police Inspector added, ”While patrolling, whenever we see vehicles parked illegally on footpaths, action is being taken against them. Most people end up taking pictures in WhatsApp groups, but action cannot be taken without verification. But if someone complains, we immediately send our staff, and a fine of Rs 500 is imposed for parking in no parking zone.”
