Pune: Lokmanya Nagar Residents Protest As Redevelopment Stalled; 803 Families Fear Losing Dream Homes
Pune, August 18, 2025: The redevelopment dream of over 803 families in Lokmanya Nagar has come to a halt following the intervention of a local MLA, leading to widespread anger among residents. Locals, already distressed due to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority’s (MHADA) mismanagement, staged a massive protest under the banner of the Lokmanya Nagar Bachao Kruti Samiti.
Residents alleged that despite the long-pending redevelopment gaining momentum, the sudden suspension of the process has left their future uncertain. Hundreds of families, including women and senior citizens, participated in the demonstrations, raising slogans against MHADA, the state government, and the MLA in question.
Currently, residents are struggling with irregular water supply, dilapidated structures, poor drainage systems, and unsafe living conditions. Many buildings, constructed between 1960 and 1964, are in a dangerous state—walls are cracked, plaster has peeled off, slabs have collapsed, and vegetation has started growing inside the structures.
Some societies had already appointed builders and begun redevelopment, with permissions granted after paying crores to MHADA. Projects involving Mittal Builders, Deshpande Builders, Manav Builders, Jogle Builders, and Icon Developers were progressing, while others were in the final approval stage. However, despite legal compliance, permissions have now been stalled, leaving residents furious.
“We have property cards, registered societies, conveyance deeds, and sale deeds. Yet MHADA’s chaotic administration has left us helpless. Unless the government intervenes immediately, our struggle will only intensify,” said members of the Lokmanya Nagar Bachao Kruti Samiti.
The residents have vowed to continue their agitation until their rightful dream homes are handed over.
