Pimpri-Chinchwad, August 12, 2025:

With stray dog attacks and rabies cases rising, it is time to take the issue seriously, said BJP MLA Mahesh Landge. He has demanded that Maharashtra govt should implement the same measures recently ordered by the Supreme Court for the Delhi-NCR region to control the stray dog menace in major cities, including Pimpri-Chinchwad.

In a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh, Landge highlighted the Supreme Court’s August 11, 2025 order, which addressed the growing problem of stray dogs in the capital region. The court noted that incidents of rabies and dog bites were becoming extremely serious and issued immediate directives:

  • 1. All stray dogs must be removed from the streets immediately.
  • 2. Authorities must set up necessary dog shelters within eight weeks.
  • 3. Records of captured dogs must be maintained, and no dog should be released back on the streets.
  • 4. A helpline for reporting dog bite incidents must start within a week.
  • 5. A list of facilities offering rabies vaccines must be published.
  • 6. Those obstructing stray dog control measures (including animal activists) will face contempt of court charges.

Landge pointed out that cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Solapur, and Kolhapur have seen a sharp rise in stray dog numbers, with frequent attacks on children, senior citizens, and the general public — some leading to rabies-related deaths. He said the issue has been repeatedly raised in the Assembly.

He has requested Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to act on the Supreme Court’s directives and provide relief to citizens.

Proposed immediate measures include:

  • 1. A special campaign to count stray dogs in all districts and municipal areas.
  • 2. Orders to set up safe dog shelters in every city and taluka.
  • 3. Providing necessary funds to local bodies.
  • 4. Statewide rabies vaccination drives in public places.
  • 5. Launching a state-level toll-free helpline for reporting dog bite cases.
  • 6. Special monitoring at schools, anganwadis, parks, and gardens.
  • 7. Legal protection and training for officials and staff involved in the campaign.
  • 8. Legal action against those obstructing the drive.
  • 9. Recognising that the stray dog problem is a public health and safety concern, not just a sanitation issue, and acting accordingly in Maharashtra, as done in Delhi.

“The stray dog issue is directly linked to public health and safety, not just cleanliness. Following the Supreme Court’s directive in Delhi, urgent measures must be taken in Maharashtra and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Citizens’ safety and health must be the top priority. I have raised this with the Chief Minister and expect positive action.”
