Pune Metro Expansion: New Routes Including Hinjewadi-Chandni Chowk to Boost Connectivity, Says Chandrakant Patil

Pune: The completion of the Pimpri-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi Metro corridors has drawn over 1.25 lakh daily commuters, offering a faster, air-conditioned, and comfortable travel alternative. Extended Metro routes are set to further reduce travel time across Pune, according to Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil.
The MahaMetro project has eased traffic congestion on key routes, including Sinhgad Road, Karve Road, and Solapur Road. With the state government’s approval, work on the Swargate-Khadakwasla and Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi corridors is expected to accelerate.
Currently, 32 kilometers of Metro routes are operational, including a 5-kilometer underground stretch between Shivajinagar and Swargate. Additionally, the central government has approved a 6-kilometer underground route from Swargate to Katraj, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The state government has submitted proposals for two new extended routes—Swargate to Hadapsar-Kharadi and Swargate to Khadakwasla—to the central government for final approval. These expansions aim to ease commuting challenges across the city.
Work is also underway on the Pimpri-Nigdi and Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar routes. Proposed routes like Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Nal Stop to Warje are under review, with efforts to secure approval for the Hinjewadi to Chandni Chowk corridor continuing.
Patil noted that the Pune Metro project, inaugurated on December 24, 2016, by Prime Minister Modi, has received positive feedback, prompting the state to greenlight further expansions to improve urban mobility.
