Pune Misal House Marks 27 Years of Spicy Legacy, Continues to Draw Crowds
Pune, June 5 — Pune, known as much for its vibrant food culture as its educational institutions, is home to one of the city’s most beloved misal joints — Pune Misal House. Located in Erandwane, this iconic eatery has been serving spicy misal for the past 27 years and remains a top choice for food lovers.
The journey began in 1998 when Aba Kale’s grandfather, originally from a small village in Shirur taluka, started selling tea and snacks like shev-chivda on a bicycle. Alongside farming and dairy work, he later began preparing and selling misal, which quickly gained popularity. After moving to Pune, he established Pune Misal House — a business now managed by the third generation of the Kale family.
Over the years, the family has experimented with flavours from across Maharashtra. Their visits to Kolhapur and Nashik helped them develop two distinct versions of rassa (gravy): a medium-spicy Pune-style rassa and a fiery Kolhapuri-style rassa.
The eatery offers two signature dishes:
- Classic Misal Thali – includes farsan, onion, lemon, sprouted matki, pav, and both types of rassa
- Bajirao Misal Thali – features the same items as the classic thali, with added buttermilk (taak) and ghee (tup)
Priced from ₹90, these thalis have become a crowd favourite. “From starting on a bicycle to running a full-fledged eatery, this journey reflects our passion and commitment,” said Aba Kale.
Pune Misal House is now more than just a food joint — it is considered a part of the city’s cultural and culinary heritage. The outlet regularly sees visits from international tourists, celebrities, and even members of the film industry, all eager to taste its famous misal.
From humble beginnings to becoming a culinary landmark, Pune Misal House continues to leave a strong mark on the city’s food map.
