Pune, April 11, 2025 – Residents of Mohamadwadi, particularly those living near D-Mart, Royale Heritage Mall, Dorabjee Paradise, VTP Celesta, Dorabjee Paradise Bungalows, Marvel Sangria, Urban Space, are raising concerns over increasing air pollution that is reportedly affecting school children and other vulnerable residents.

Locals blame the constant movement of concrete mixer trucks involved in ongoing construction work for the deteriorating air quality. They say the trucks leave behind cement residue which hardens, turns to dust, and spreads through the area, even damaging recently laid tarmac roads.

Danish Khan, a resident of NIBM, shared that he has filed several complaints with PMC yet the issue remains unresolved. “There’s so much pollution in the area due to the continuous construction. The authorities must repair the damaged roads and ensure regular cleaning,” he said.

When contacted by Pune Pulse, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Junior Engineer Sandip Dipake acknowledged the issue. He stated that the road is repaired frequently. As many RMC trucks and water tankers pass over the road, there is a lot of concrete that gets spilled over the road. It is cleaned with the help of JCBs as it gets hardened due to constant water spillage from tankers. We have been raising the issue with Traffic police to take stern action against the vehicles who damage the road.

Daljeet Goraya, secretary of Ganga Kingston society said, “I have been living in this area for the last 15 years. I have seen the area transforming into a concrete jungle. There are many road works as well as construction work happening simultaneously in the area which is leading to air pollution. PMC as well as developers must come up with some solution to the problem as people are frequently falling sick because of this.”

Nelma Pinheiro, a local resident said, “The essence of pure air has been lost in our city as we feel the rising effects of air pollution in our environment. Air pollution in our city is growing at an alarming rate and its is sucking the clean air out of our lungs. Human greed to exploit the city’s natural resources is leading to an irreversible level of air pollution.”

Despite PMC’s assurances, residents continue to demand stricter measures to address the growing air pollution in the area and safeguard public health.
