Pune, October 9, 2025: During the 72-hour illegal strike called by the joint action committee of 7 out of 29 electricity employee unions starting Thursday, October 9, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) maintained smooth electricity supply across the state. Approximately 62% of engineers, officers, and employees did not participate in the strike.

MSEDCL management had already conveyed a positive and consistent stance on all demands of the joint action committee in prior meetings, and a written record of this was provided to the committee. Despite this, the 72-hour strike commenced on October 9.

Electricity being an essential service, the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) has been invoked to prevent inconvenience to citizens, and MSEDCL has clarified that the strike is illegal under this act.

To ensure uninterrupted supply during the three-day strike, MSEDCL implemented emergency alternative arrangements. On Thursday, October 9, about 62% of MSEDCL staff were present, and an additional 20,000 technical outsourced employees (operators and electrical assistants) were deployed. A central emergency control room was set up at MSEDCL headquarters in Mumbai under the supervision of the Chief Engineer to monitor the state’s power supply 24/7. Regional offices also established separate control rooms to update senior officials and headquarters on the situation.

Alternative workforce deployment included MSEDCL staff not participating in the strike, 20,000 outsourced technical employees, and contractors from MSEDCL’s approved list, assigned temporarily to local offices and substations to maintain electricity supply. All regional offices ensured that contractors had the necessary manpower, materials, and vehiclesto manage uninterrupted power.

Citizens experiencing power-related issues are advised to contact MSEDCL’s central customer service at 1912, 1800-212-3435, or 1800-233-3435, all of which are toll-free and operational 24/7.
