Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to construct 4,173 affordable homes in five areas of the city — Dhanori, Hadapsar, Baner, Kondhwa, Balewadi, and Vadgaon Khurd — under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This initiative aims to fulfill Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of providing a home for every citizen. The PMAY scheme, launched by the Central Government, focuses on providing affordable housing to economically weaker sections of society. In the first phase, PMC constructed 2,918 houses in Vadgaon Budruk, Kharadi, and Hadapsar, which were allotted to eligible citizens through a lottery system. These homes were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022.

Following the success of the first phase, the Prime Minister announced the second phase of PMAY in September 2024. After initial delays due to the state assembly elections, PMC has now started accepting online registrations for the second phase. Under this phase, 4,176 houses will be built across Dhanori, Hadapsar, Kondhwa, Balewadi, and Vadgaon Khurd, with an estimated cost of ₹300 crore.

City Engineer Prashant Waghmare stated that constructing homes on municipal land significantly reduces costs, allowing affordable housing for economically weaker sections. The initiative is expected to receive significant public interest and help fulfill the dream of homeownership for many families.
