Pune Municipal Corporation Urges Citizens To Establish Feeding Spots For Strays

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking a proactive step towards caring for stray animals in the city. In a recent circular issued to all Pune societies, the PMC has encouraged citizens to create designated feeding spots for these vulnerable creatures.

Dr. Sarita Funde, the Veterinary Superintendent of PMC, emphasized the importance of feeding stray animals, stating that like all living beings, they too require sustenance. Without regular access to food and water, these animals face the risk of starvation and death. Dr. Funde appealed to the sense of responsibility among citizens, urging them to contribute to the well-being of these creatures. By establishing marked feeding areas within societies, PMC aims to facilitate the feeding process and avoid potential objections from other residents. Signboards with the label “Animal Feeding Point” will be placed to clearly identify these locations.

Asha Ambekar, the Founder of Shashwat Foundation, applauded PMC’s initiative and highlighted the necessity of providing daily sustenance to stray animals. She compared their need for food and water to that of humans, explaining that regular care would prevent aggressive behavior and potential harm to people. Ambekar also called for the society residents’ cooperation in safeguarding the feeding spots and their equipment, warning that any damage or disruption to the feeding bowls or related facilities is a non-cognizable offense under Section 425 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

PMC made it clear that they will not tolerate any mistreatment or harm towards stray animals. Engaging in illegal activities involving these animals will be met with accountability, as causing harm or killing them is a cognizable criminal offense punishable under Sections 428 or 429 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In light of the above, the PMC has earnestly requested all residential societies to come forward and establish integrated animal feeding spots within their premises. This collective effort aims to ensure the proper sustenance and daily care of stray animals, making the city a more compassionate and safer place for both humans and animals alike.
