Pune:Â Nagar Road Residents Demand Urgent Safety Measures Amid Traffic Changes
Pune: The Association of Nagar Road Citizens Forum has raised serious concerns over the recent traffic changes implemented on Nagar Road, citing safety risks due to the lack of essential infrastructure. In a formal letter dated March 27, 2025, addressed to senior traffic police officials, the forum highlighted the hazards posed to pedestrians and motorists following the removal of traffic signals at key junctions.
The forum acknowledged the efforts of the traffic police in easing congestion but criticized the partial implementation of changes without necessary safety measures. “While vehicle speeds have increased, they have also led to dangerous situations for road users. I have personally witnessed near-accidents multiple times,” stated forum convenor Qaneez Sukhrani.
Key concerns raised by the forum include:
- Insufficient barriers and blinkers at U-turn points, increasing the risk of collisions, particularly at night.
- Absence of rumble strips and speed breakers as per IRC norms, making it difficult for mainstream traffic to slow down before U-turns.
- Unsafe merging conditions for vehicles after making U-turns, leaving drivers at the mercy of high-speed traffic.
- Lack of pedestrian crossings, zebra markings, or designated wardens, forcing pedestrians to risk their lives while crossing roads.
The forum has urged the traffic police to immediately implement visible signboards, additional barricades, and speed control measures before accidents occur. They also demanded that the findings of any traffic surveys conducted before and after these changes be made public.
The citizens’ group has called for an urgent discussion and site visit with the traffic police to ensure a safer and more structured approach to traffic management on Nagar Road.
