Pune–Nagpur and Kolhapur–Nagpur Trains to Get More General Coaches from September 5, Bringing Much-Needed Relief to Passengers
Starting September 5, daily train travelers on the Pune–Nagpur and Kolhapur–Nagpur routes can expect a more comfortable and affordable journey. In response to persistent passenger complaints about overcrowding, Indian Railways has announced the addition of four extra general class coaches to both trains, increasing the total to six general coaches each.
These trains, operated under the Pune Railway Division, have consistently seen high demand, especially from passengers heading to regions like Vidarbha and Khandesh—areas with limited direct rail connectivity from Pune and Kolhapur. Until now, just two general coaches were available per train, leaving many travelers scrambling for space or forced to opt for pricey private buses that charge between ₹1,500 to ₹2,000. In contrast, train fares in general class cost just ₹160, and ₹380 in sleeper class.
With the upcoming increase in coach capacity, approximately 600 additional passengers will be accommodated daily, easing the pressure on existing compartments.
Hemant Kumar Behera, Public Relations Officer of the Pune Division, confirmed the move was made in response to long-standing commuter demands. “Passengers have been requesting this for a while. This step will greatly improve their travel experience by reducing crowding and making train journeys more accessible,” he said.
The initiative underscores Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to enhance passenger convenience and affordability, especially as travel costs rise across the country. By expanding coach capacity, the Railways offers a practical solution for daily commuters and long-distance travelers alike, reinforcing its role as the backbone of India’s public transport network.
