Pune: In a decisive move to ease traffic congestion along Pune’s Nagar Road, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed the Pune Municipal Commissioner to promptly dismantle the incomplete Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor. He also approved the extension of the proposed two-tier flyover from Wagholi to Viman Nagar.

The directive came during a high-level meeting held to address pressing civic issues in the Vadgaon Sheri constituency, including traffic bottlenecks and water scarcity. The meeting was attended by former MLA Sunil Tingre, PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, Additional Commissioner Pradeep Chandran, City Engineer Prashant Waghmare, and other senior civic officials.

Traffic Relief for Nagar Road Commuters

Highlighting the risks posed by the unfinished BRT route between Somnath Nagar Chowk and Kharadi Bypass Chowk, Sunil Tingre urged the administration to take swift action. He noted that the corridor has become a cause of frequent accidents and increasing congestion. Responding to the concern, Pawar instructed the immediate removal of the corridor, with the commissioner assuring prompt implementation.

Pawar also spoke to Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sujata Saini during the meeting and directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to extend the planned flyover—initially set to end at Wagholi—all the way to Phoenix Mall in Viman Nagar. He asked the PMC to expedite the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOC) to ensure speedy commencement of the project.

Free Water Tankers to Curb Exploitation

Addressing water shortage issues in localities like Vadgaon Sheri, Ganesh Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Kharadi, and Viman Nagar, citizens complained about unauthorized charges by private tanker operators. To counter this, Pawar ordered PMC to label all tankers supplying water as “Free Tankers” to ensure residents are not misled. He also directed officials to restore normal water supply urgently.

Fast-Track Clearance for Yerawada Housing Project

In a parallel development, a delegation from the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) requested expedited clearances for a stalled redevelopment project in Yerawada. Pawar promised swift action, instructing PMC to process approvals without delay to facilitate the project’s continuation.

These steps underscore the government’s proactive approach in tackling urban challenges in Pune. From improving traffic infrastructure to securing essential services like water and housing, the administration aims to enhance the quality of life for city residents.
