In an unusual weather event, Baramati, Indapur, and Daund tehsils in Pune district experienced record-breaking rainfall on Sunday, May 25 — the heaviest for the month of May in the past 50 years. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who visited flood-affected areas early Monday morning, described the rainfall as “unprecedented.”

The intense downpour prompted the urgent deployment of two specialised National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams following a request from the Pune district collector. Deputy CM Pawar, along with Collector Jitendra Dudi, surveyed the damage across the affected regions and assured residents of prompt assistance.

“The average rainfall for these tehsils across the entire monsoon season is about 14 inches. However, Shetfalgadhe in Indapur recorded nearly 13 inches in just a few hours. The situation worsened after a breach in the Nira canal near Nimtek in Baramati,” said Pawar during the inspection. He also noted that the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the region on May 28.

Despite being typically rain-deficient areas, the three tehsils faced severe flooding. Rainwater entered homes in around 70 villages in Indapur and affected nearly 150 houses in Baramati, prompting authorities to evacuate residents to safer locations.

A two-hour closure was reported on a stretch of the Pune-Solapur highway near Indapur due to waterlogging, though traffic resumed once the water levels receded.

According to the NDRF, 19 homes suffered partial damage in Baramati. In Katewadi, a family of seven was rescued from their waterlogged home, while in Jalochi village, a man identified as Rupesh Singh was saved by the fire brigade after being stranded in a stream when his motorcycle was swept away.

Officials continue to assess crop and property damage in the affected areas.
