As Diwali celebrations continue, ophthalmologists in Pune have reported multiple eye injuries caused by firecrackers, sparking concerns about public safety. Victims range from five-year-old children to young adults, highlighting the need for caution and regulation.
According to doctors, most injuries were minor to moderate, including corneal damage, eyelash burns, and superficial skin burns. However, ophthalmologists stress the potential for severe harm and advocate government intervention to regulate firecracker quality. “In the past three days, I’ve treated around 10 firecracker-related eye injuries,” said ophthalmologist.
The victims were between five to 10 years old, and fortunately, injuries weren’t sight-threatening. Ophthalmologist at city’s renowned eye hospital , shared a similar experience. “A 10-year-old child suffered a corneal superficial ball burn but recovered fully with special treatment.”
Dr from another eye hospital treated a 24-year-old who suffered a slight corneal burn when a firecracker exploded, sending a stone into his eye. “He recovered in three days,” he said.
Ophthalmologists urge the public to exercise caution when handling firecrackers and advocate stricter regulations to prevent such injuries. To ensure a safe Diwali, citizens are advised to maintain a safe distance from firecrackers, wear protective eyewear, avoid handling firecrackers if unsure, and keep children supervised.
By taking precautions and promoting responsible firecracker use, Pune can ensure a safer and more enjoyable Diwali celebration. The medical community’s concerns highlight the need for collective responsibility in preventing firecracker-related accidents and protecting public health.
