Pune: A 21-year-old business administration student, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, drove an Audi into the railing and a pole on the Aundh-Ravet BRTS corridor near Jagtap Dairy around 12:30 am on Friday.

The impact resulted in one of the car’s wheels detaching and hitting an autorickshaw, causing it to overturn and injuring four daily-wage workers inside.

Pimpri Chinchwad’s deputy commissioner of police, Bapu Bangar, reported that the student, son of an IT professional, and his two friends who were in the car also sustained minor injuries. The three were returning home to Pimple Saudagar after celebrating the student’s birthday on June 13 at a friend’s house.

Senior inspector Nivrutti Kolhatkar from Wakad police station said that the student was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

The injured daily-wage workers were identified as Tanaji Patil (40), Vaibhav Chaturbhuj (24), Buland Kumar (19), and Minto Kumar (20), all residents of Marunji in Hinjewadi. They received preliminary treatment at a hospital and were subsequently discharged. Raju Dhakane, an autorickshaw driver who witnessed the accident, informed the police that the car first hit the barricades and then the streetlight pole, which collapsed upon impact.

Kolhatkar added that police took the car driver to a hospital in Aundh, where tests confirmed that the student was drunk.
