In a heartwarming and challenging operation, the Pune Fire Brigade, along with a group of dedicated animal rescuers, successfully saved two adorable puppies trapped inside a half-filled tar drum. The heart-wrenching incident was reported in the Parge Nagar area of Kondhwa, Pune district, and locals immediately sought help to rescue the stranded puppies.

Upon receiving the distress call around 10.15 am on Saturday morning, the Kondhwa fire station promptly dispatched a team to the location. With the assistance of the caring residents, the drum was brought down from the hillock using a tractor. However, the situation turned dire as the puppies were discovered to be firmly stuck in thick tar.

Ingenious measures were taken by the fire brigade team, led by firefighter Ravi Bartakke, who used a circular saw machine and various small tools to delicately free the puppies from the viscous material. With the guidance and support of animal rescue experts, the hour-long operation was conducted meticulously, ensuring the safety and well-being of the trapped pups.

Anand Adsul, representing the Wild Animals and Snakes Protection Society, expressed relief at the successful rescue, stating that the two puppies were unharmed. The rescued pups were then entrusted to an organization equipped with skilled veterinarians who specialize in treating rescued animals, ensuring they receive the care they need.

While animal rescue is not the primary focus of civic firefighting agencies, it highlights the compassion and commitment of firefighters who often respond to calls involving birds, domestic animals, and stray animals. This incident also underscores the importance of cooperation between firefighting agencies, animal rescuers, forest department officials, and veterinarians in such emergencies.

The incident has prompted some fire brigade units in Maharashtra to undergo basic training modules in animal rescue operations recently, showcasing the dedication to expanding their rescue capabilities.
