Commuters battling the daily traffic nightmare between Katraj and Yerawada in Pune may soon find relief, thanks to a proposed underground tunnel project by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). This ambitious project aims to drastically reduce travel time and alleviate the severe congestion plaguing the 19-kilometer stretch.

Tackling Pune’s Traffic Woes

Currently, the journey between Katraj and Yerawada can take a grueling hour, making daily commutes a frustrating experience. The PMRDA’s proposed underground tunnels, estimated to cost Rs 7,500 crore, promise to slash travel time by up to 30 minutes, offering a much-needed alternative to the overburdened road network.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has given preliminary approval to the project. Ashok Bhalkar, PMRDA’s chief engineer, announced that a consultant will be appointed within two weeks to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study. “Once the consultant is onboard, we expect the report to be completed within three to four months. It will then be submitted to the government for approval,” Bhalkar stated. The project is anticipated to be completed within four years of government approval.

Key Features and Benefits

The tunnels will feature multiple entry and exit points, connecting major arterial roads such as Ahmednagar Road, Solapur Road, Satara Road, Old Mumbai Highway, and Mulshi Road. Inspired by Mumbai’s Coastal Road tunnels, the Pune project will have three lanes in each tunnel, potentially reducing travel time by 50%.

“The project is not only expected to improve urban mobility but also change inter-city travel,” an official noted. The Chief Minister opted for the underground tunnel over an elevated corridor, emphasizing the project’s long-term benefits.

Feasibility Study and Implementation

The feasibility study will meticulously examine various aspects, including geological and environmental impacts, traffic patterns, and economic viability. It will also assess construction methods, potential disruptions to existing infrastructure, and challenges related to land acquisition and utility relocation.

A PMRDA official explained that the study will also address funding models, which may involve contributions from the state government, municipal corporations, and MIDC. “The report will include financial models and implementation strategies for the state government’s review. It will also suggest measures to minimize disruptions to local communities during construction,” the official added.

Expected Impact and Future Outlook

The underground tunnel project is poised to revolutionize Pune’s transportation infrastructure, significantly reducing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity between the city’s north and south regions. The project’s success will depend on the thoroughness of the feasibility study and the efficiency of its implementation.
