Pune News: Koregaon Park Businessman Gets ₹5 Crore Extortion Threat from Pakistan-Based Number
Pune, April 10: A high-profile extortion case has surfaced from Pune’s Koregaon Park area, where a 38-year-old businessman has reported receiving threats demanding ₹5 crore from a phone number traced to Pakistan. The incident has sparked serious concerns over growing cross-border cybercrime activity.
According to police, the businessman—who lives on Boat Club Road and runs a private aviation firm that leases helicopters and airplanes—first received a threatening voice message via a social media platform on February 25. The message warned him, “You are planning to buy a new helicopter, right? Before purchasing it, you will have to pay a certain amount.”
The intimidation continued, with more messages sent on February 28 and March 16. One of the threats reportedly stated, “We have all your information. If you don’t pay the ₹5 crore, be ready to face serious consequences.”
The case was registered at the Koregaon Park Police Station after the businessman filed a formal complaint. He told authorities that he operates businesses not only in India but also in Dubai and the UK. The messages, which were traced back to a Pakistani number, are suspected to have been sent using proxy servers to conceal the identity of the sender.
The Pune City Police, along with the Cyber Cell and Crime Branch, have launched an investigation into the extortion attempt. Officials confirmed that the international origin of the messages has raised the threat level, and efforts are ongoing to trace the culprits and verify if more individuals or businesses are being targeted similarly.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Authorities have assured that the matter is being treated as a high-priority investigation due to its international ramifications.
