Pune News: Kothrud Residents Hold 4-Hour Roadblock, Protest Against MIT Over Reckless Driving Incident
In a strong show of unity, members of Shilpa Society in Kothrud held a Rasta Roko against MIT college in Kothrud on October 10, 2024, following an accident involving a senior citizen. The accident, caused by the reckless driving of an MIT student, sparked the spontaneous protest, which lasted over four hours.
Although the victim belonged to a society near Shilpa Society, residents came together to block the road, preventing MIT students and staff from accessing the campus. Their protest drew attention from key figures, including the MIT director, security chief, Kothrud police inspector, traffic police inspector, and local politicians, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
A letter was submitted to MIT, demanding immediate corrective actions to address safety concerns in the area. A joint meeting involving MIT, police, traffic officials, PMC, and citizens will soon be scheduled to find long-term solutions to the persistent issues faced by the residents.
Sandeep Bhadkamkar from CF@11, a non-political citizen group representing 60+ societies, praised the dedication of residents and all citizens involved in the protest to raise the issue troubling the locals for many years now.
The protest emerged after an 8:45 a.m. accident near Shilpa Society where a senior citizen was badly hit by a reckless two wheeler driver, highlighting ongoing concerns about reckless driving by MIT students in the area.
