Kuki community protests against PM Modi in Pune-low

PUNE: After Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Dagdusheth Ganpati temple on Tuesday to receive the Lokmanya Tilak Award, members of the Kuki community in Pune joined the protest against the Opposition’s Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

The protestors, holding placards used slogans like ‘Modi go to Manipur’ and ‘Modi go back’ to call attention to the PM’s inaction over the ongoing violence in the northeast state.

A number of Manipuris, especially students joined the protest near the statue of Lokmanya Tilak in the vicinity of Mahatma Phule Mandai area. 

The protest was mostly attended by the Congress, Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction, the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Communist Party of India, and Vanchi Bahujan Aghadi.

Many leaders like Congress MLA Ravindra Dhangekar, Arvind Shinde, leader Mohan Joshi, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare, and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) city chief Prashant Jagtap were present.

The Kuki protesters carried cards and shouted slogans: ‘Justice for Manipur’,  ‘Humanity Was Paraded Naked’, and ‘Modi-ji; Your Silence May Be The End Of Our People’, ‘What is more important, Our Lives or Votes?’

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Singh Gill (Zone-1) said, “Leaders of different political parties and other individuals received notices in certain cases, while others were taken into custody for security and law enforcement purposes. There were about 300 protesters at Mahatma Phule Mandai. Some opposition party leaders began protests in the vicinity of Swargate, but we arrested them and directed them to the Mandai site, where protests were already taking place.”
