Pune News: Man Fires Gun In Self-Defense Against Charging Dog, No Injuries Reported

Pune: Fresh Trouble For Shashank Hagawane: Fake Address Used In Gun License Application
In a shocking incident early Sunday morning in Pune’s Dattawadi area, a man fired a gun at a dog charging towards him, claiming self-defense. Fortunately, the dog was unharmed as the bullet missed.
The accused has been charged by the Parvati police following a complaint from Siddharth Kamble, the dog’s owner. The incident occurred around 2:30 AM when the accused was returning home on foot after getting off a rickshaw. Kamble’s pet dog reportedly ran towards the accused, prompting him to fire a shot in fear of being bitten. Kamble, alarmed by the sound, rushed to the scene and later filed a complaint with the police.
Senior Police Inspector Nandkumar Gaikwad confirmed that a case was registered under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and that the licensed pistol has been seized. The accused claims he fired the shot in self-defense as the dog charged at him. He said that when I was returning home, I came across the dog on the street. I was being very patient initially when he was around. But when he charged at me, I used my gun, but shot aiming at a distance and not towards him, just to shoo him away. I am too scared of dogs.
This incident adds to a series of dog-related cases in the Parvati police jurisdiction, including two previous attacks by dangerous breeds like pit bulls, which led to legal action against the owners.
In Pune, cases of pet and stray dogs biting residents are common. The law requires pet owners to supervise their dogs, and if a bite occurs, the owner can face charges under the Indian Penal Code and be liable for compensation.
