A daring theft took place in Karvenagar, Pune, on Tuesday evening, when a man impersonating a police official swindled a gold chain worth Rs 84,000 from a local jewellery shop. The incident occurred around 6:40 pm, and the storeowner, a 48-year-old resident of Karvenagar, lodged a complaint with the Warje police on Wednesday evening after discovering the theft.

The suspect, wearing a police cap, walked into the shop and placed an envelope on the counter with the word “cash” written on it, giving the impression that it contained money. He then selected a gold chain and showed interest in purchasing it. As the storeowner began preparing the bill, the suspect picked up the chain and told him he would return in two minutes, leaving the envelope behind. Unbeknownst to the store owner, the envelope contained newspaper cutouts shaped like currency notes, not actual cash.

The storeowner didn’t suspect anything amiss until 30 minutes had passed and the suspect failed to return. Upon checking the envelope, he was shocked to find the fake currency notes. The police are now investigating the incident, and a search is underway for the suspect.

This incident is not the first time thieves have posed as police officials to commit crimes in Pune. In a similar incident, a 72-year-old man and his wife were allegedly robbed of gold jewellery worth Rs 2.6 lakh by two men posing as police. The police are urging citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to prevent such crimes.
