Pimpri, January 31, 2025 – Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated an inquiry after allegations surfaced regarding the use of expired medicines at the late Indira Gandhi Maternity Home in Sangvi, particularly for women who have undergone delivery. According to accusations by MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena), the Covishield vaccine, which was used during the COVID-19 pandemic, was found among the hospital’s medical supplies. The party has demanded immediate action against the responsible authorities.

Residents had previously raised concerns about expired medicines being used at the hospital. In response, MNS city vice president Raju Sawale, sub-division president Alexander Moses, along with members Mangesh Bhalekar and Dilip Thombre, conducted an unscheduled visit to the facility. During their inspection, they discovered the Covishield vaccine, expired Betadine, and other medications being used for post-delivery procedures. MNS has raised alarms about the use of such expired medications.

MNS officials reached out to Dr. Laxman Gofane, the medical officer of the municipal health department, urging an investigation into the issue. Dr. Gofane assured them that action would be taken following a thorough inquiry.

However, MNS later accused the hospital staff of attempting to cover up the issue by removing the labels from expired medication bottles. On the following day, while inspecting a vehicle transporting biomedical waste, MNS found expired medicine bottles. When questioned, Dr. Tripti Sangale, who oversees the hospital, contacted staff to inquire about the incident. MNS suspects foul play and is concerned that the use of expired medications could pose significant health risks, particularly to women.
