Pune Civic Body Consults NIMHANS To Investigate Rising GBS Cases

On January 30, 2025, a 36-year-old male patient from Pimpri-Gurav was confirmed dead at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital. The deceased, who worked as a driver for Ola-Uber, had been admitted to the hospital on January 21, 2025.

A specialized committee at the hospital investigated the cause of death and determined that it was due to “severe respiratory distress syndrome caused by pneumonia,” which led to difficulty in breathing. Additionally, the patient was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). A nerve conduction test conducted on January 22, 2025, confirmed the presence of GBS.

The medical committee has provided the following cause of death:

  • Immediate Cause of Death: Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
  • Antecedent Cause of Death: Bilateral Pneumonia
  • Other Significant Condition: Guillain-Barré Syndrome

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has urged the public not to panic, as the patient also had other underlying conditions in addition to GBS. To raise awareness and clear doubts regarding the disease, a helpline has been set up by the PMC for citizens to get proper information.
