Pune, July 15, 2025: In a major development in the high-profile Vaishnavi Hagawane suicide case, the Pune police on Monday filed a chargesheet against 11 accused, including her husband and in-laws. The chargesheet, spanning 1,670 pages, was submitted in a Pune court within 58 days of the 24-year-old’s death.
The Bavdhan police have claimed that they have gathered substantial evidence against all accused. Special public prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar has been appointed to represent the state in this case.
Case Background
Vaishnavi Hagawane died by suicide at her residence in Bhukum, Mulshi on May 16. She allegedly took the extreme step due to sustained physical and mental harassment by her in-laws over dowry and pressure to buy land.
The chargesheet names her husband Shashank Rajendra Hagawane (27), father-in-law Rajendra Tukaram Hagawane (63), mother-in-law Lata Rajendra Hagawane (54), sister-in-law Karishma Rajendra Hagawane (31), and brother-in-law Sushil Rajendra Hagawane (27).
Others Named in the Case
The document also accuses Nilesh Chavan (35) of Karvenagar of illegally detaining Vaishnavi’s child and threatening her relatives with a pistol. Additionally, five others have been charged with providing shelter to Rajendra and Sushil Hagawane after the incident.
Senior inspector Anil Vibhute of Bavdhan police stated that each accused’s role in the crime has been supported by strong evidence in the chargesheet.
Court Proceedings
Five of the accused, charged with harbouring the main accused, have already secured bail. Meanwhile, six others, including key members of the Hagawane family, remain in judicial custody.
Bail pleas of Lata Hagawane, Karishma Hagawane, and Nilesh Chavan are currently under consideration. A hearing on Chavan’s bail application is scheduled for Tuesday, while the others will be heard on July 25. The trial is expected to commence once these proceedings conclude.
