Pimpri-Chinchwad, May 31: In a decisive move, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh has ordered the disconnection of water supply to 184 housing societies starting June 1, due to their failure to operate their Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).

Despite repeated notices and appeals, these societies have kept their STPs non-functional, violating mandatory regulations for water reuse in large housing projects. Out of 456 major housing societies in the city, only 264 have operational STPs, while 184 continue to default for various reasons. The civic body had already issued first, second, and third notices to many of these societies. In some cases, even entry was denied to municipal inspection teams.

As per state regulations (UDCPR), any residential complex with construction exceeding 20,000 square meters, or those using over 20,000 liters of water daily, must install and operate STPs. Treated water from these plants is expected to be used for gardening, cleaning, and vehicle washing—thus easing the strain on potable water supply.

PCMC currently supplies 620–630 MLD (million liters daily) of water to the growing population of Pimpri-Chinchwad. Yet, many societies depend on water tankers due to high demand. Using recycled water from STPs is key to reducing this burden. Societies that follow these rules also receive property tax rebates.

However, repeated awareness drives and support efforts have failed to generate cooperation from the defaulting 184 societies. Hence, the civic administration has now adopted a strict stance, ordering complete water disconnection for these societies from June 1.

This decision aims to enforce accountability and ensure responsible water reuse across the expanding urban landscape of Pimpri-Chinchwad.
