Pune, June 24, 2025: A disturbing incident during the revered Ashadi Wari procession has sparked outrage in Pune. A 57-year-old woman identified as Nasim Shaikh, residing near Gaibipir Dargah in the Camp area, allegedly threw meat and bone at a group of Warkaris participating in the Palkhi procession on June 21.

The Ashadhi Wari, a centuries-old tradition symbolising religious harmony and devotion, involves thousands of Warkaris marching toward Pandharpur in honour of Lord Vitthal. The Maharashtra government enforces restrictions on meat and liquor sales along the Palkhi route to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrimage.

According to a complaint filed by Akkalwant Rathod, a resident of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the incident occurred when the Dindi procession passed by Shaikh’s hut near Mammadevi Chowk. As per the FIR, Warkari Maya Dhumal was allegedly struck with a red-coloured piece of meat. When Rathod questioned Shaikh, she reportedly abused him and defiantly declared, “I am not afraid of anyone, do whatever you want.”

A nearby police officer was alerted, and Shaikh allegedly threw a bone as well. Rathod later approached Lashkar Police Station, where a formal complaint was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

While incidents of interfaith support and solidarity during Wari—such as Muslim families offering space for Hindu wedding rituals—have made headlines this year, this episode has raised concerns about communal sensitivity during such sacred events.

Further investigation is underway. Authorities are appealing to the public to maintain peace and harmony during the ongoing Wari.
