Pune: NHAI Launches Drive Against Illegal Highway Encroachments and Garbage Dumping
Pune, August 4, 2025: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a strict action plan to tackle the growing problem of encroachments and illegal garbage dumping along national highways near Pune. The move comes amid rising concerns about road safety, with recent accidents attributed to roadside obstructions and poor visibility.
NHAI officials revealed that several roadside businesses—including eateries, vehicle repair shops, and informal vendors—have set up unauthorized structures along highway shoulders. These encroachments, combined with unchecked dumping of waste, are causing hazardous conditions for motorists, especially during nighttime and the ongoing monsoon season.
Encroachments reduce visibility and create unexpected diversions, which are dangerous for all road users. In addition, garbage accumulation near the highways contributes to waterlogging and slippery roads, particularly affecting heavy vehicles.
To address the issue, NHAI has begun issuing formal notices to violators, demanding removal of illegal structures and proper waste disposal within a stipulated timeframe. The agency has warned that non-compliance will lead to demolition drives and monetary penalties under the National Highways Act.
Regular inspections and highway clean-up operations are underway. NHAI has emphasized its commitment to ensuring safer, obstruction-free highways and has stated that stricter actions will follow if violations persist.
