Pune: NIBM Annexe, Mohammadwadi Residents Demand Action on Impostor Gangs, Slam PMC Over Missing CCTVs
Pune, July 19, 2025 – Residents of NIBM Annexe and Mohammadwadi are sounding the alarm over a growing menace of impostor gangs targeting affluent neighbourhoods. In a formal complaint addressed to the Union Home Secretary, Maharashtra DGP, and Pune Police Commissioner, citizens have sought stringent action under MCOCA to curb organized extortion rackets operating in the area.
According to the complaint, authored by community advocate Jaymala Dhankikar, these gangs masquerade as government officials in khaki uniforms and fake social workers to intimidate and defraud residents. The impostors reportedly move around high-profile societies such as Ganga Kingston, Raheja Premiere, and Imperial, targeting senior citizens and women under the pretext of identity or tax checks. Victims are coerced into handing over cash and valuables in what locals term “soft extortion.”

Adding to the threat is another group of youth pretending to be social volunteers collecting donations and groceries for the underprivileged. Residents, however, allege these so-called do-gooders use luxury smartphones and bikes, exposing their fraudulent intent.
The complaint accuses Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) of gross negligence, despite collecting ₹200 crore annually in taxes from these premium zones. Citizens have demanded urgent deployment of 100 CCTV cameras, emergency police boxes, and police combing operations from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in vulnerable areas.
Drawing parallels with the Koyta Gang crackdown, residents insist on a similar level of intelligence gathering and task forces to neutralize the threat. “If an untoward incident occurs, PMC and police officials will be squarely responsible,” the letter warns.
As public pressure mounts, the focus now shifts to whether authorities will act decisively to restore safety in one of Pune’s most prominent belts.
