Pimpri-Chinchwad, October 9, 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation has strongly criticized the growing encroachment of footpaths across the city, calling out the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) “smart city planning” for turning into a “nightmare” for citizens.

In a letter addressed to the PCMC and Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate (PCPC), the federation highlighted how wide footpaths—originally planned for pedestrian convenience—have now become spaces for illegal commercial activities. “Almost 90% of footpaths are encroached upon by shopkeepers for business expansion. What was meant for pedestrians has become a zone for encroachment and illegal parking,” the federation stated.

They further alleged that during festivals, these spaces are occupied by firecracker vendors, while other times they host temporary markets. The federation has urged authorities to permit registered housing societies to set up cooperative firecracker stalls at concessional rates, ensuring safety and fair pricing.

The federation also appealed to residents to boycott encroached footpath stalls and support cooperative alternatives that adhere to fire and civic safety norms.
