Pimpri, October 9, 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken a major step towards efficient waste management and recycling by setting up a state-of-the-art Waste-to-Energy project at the Moshi garbage depot. The plant generates 14 megawatts (MW) of electricity from city waste and marks a significant milestone in promoting eco-friendly and sustainable development.

The project, commissioned in October 2023 by Antony Lara Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd. under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, has already produced 16.66 crore units of electricity by August 2025 using 3,41,111 metric tonnes of refuse-derived fuel (RDF). After meeting the operational power requirements, 15.57 crore units have been supplied to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company’s (MSEDCL) grid.

This energy is being used under the Open Access system to power PCMC’s water treatment plants at Ravet and Chikhali, sewage treatment plants at Kasarwadi and Charholi, and the Thergaon hospital. Soon, six additional PCMC facilities — including YCM Hospital and sewage treatment plants at Chikhali, Bhatnagar, Akurdi, Pimple Nilakh, and Chinchwad — will also be connected. So far, the initiative has saved the civic body approximately ₹76.57 crore in electricity expenses.

The Moshi Waste-to-Energy project has drastically reduced the waste burden on the depot while producing clean energy for the city. PCMC has appealed to citizens to cooperate by properly segregating household and industrial waste to strengthen this sustainable effort.
