To ensure smooth traffic flow at Sangamwadi Chowk during major infrastructure upgrades, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has opted for a single-span steel girder design for the proposed flyover. This strategic move will eliminate the need for a central pillar at the busy Bindu Madhav Balasaheb Thackeray Chowk in Yerawada, allowing uninterrupted traffic during construction.

On June 4, PMC issued a tender for the flyover and grade separator project, with an estimated cost of ₹115.73 crore. Due to space limitations, the grade separator component will be taken up at a later stage. The civic body has set a deadline of 30 months to complete the entire project.

According to PMC’s project department, the initial phase will begin along the BRTS corridor. PMC will install the single-span girder on side supports, so the two side lanes can remain open for traffic. This will avoid closures and help manage congestion.

Further, multiple large-scale infrastructure projects are planned along Ahmednagar Road, including an elevated corridor from Vimannagar Chowk to Shirur, a Shastrinagar flyover and grade separator, and the metro extension from Ramwadi to Wagholi. These developments are expected to increase vehicular load on roads connected to Sangamwadi Chowk.

The intersection at Sangamwadi Chowk serves as a vital link between Sangamwadi, Yerawada, Deccan College, and Pune Airport.

As per the project blueprint and consultant report:

  • four-lane flyover will be built connecting Khadki to Bund Garden Road.
  • unidirectional grade separator will run from Sangamwadi towards Dr Ambedkar Chowk and Bund Garden.
  • The plan also includes slip roads and allied infrastructure work to ease the traffic burden.

The flyover is specifically designed to ease movement between Deccan College and Yerawada, while the grade separator will streamline flow for vehicles traveling from Shivajinagar via Sangamwadi Road toward Airport Road and Yerawada.
