Pune, July 17, 2026: In a major step towards improving traffic flow in central Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Standing Committee has approved a proposal for a new flyover between Sakhar Sankul and the Old Pune–Mumbai Highway. The project, estimated to cost around ₹75 crore, is aimed at reducing chronic congestion in the Shivajinagar-Wakdewadi corridor.

The proposal will now be placed before the PMC General Body for final approval before work can proceed.

Flyover Planned To Reduce Pressure on Wakdewadi Underpass

The Wakdewadi underpass currently serves as the primary route for motorists travelling from Shivajinagar towards the Old Pune–Mumbai Highway. With traffic volumes increasing significantly over the years, the underpass frequently experiences severe congestion, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.

PMC officials believe the proposed flyover will provide an alternative route, helping ease traffic movement and reduce travel delays in one of the city’s busiest junctions.

Technical Approval Already Granted

The project has been prepared by PMC’s Chief Engineer (Projects) Department. The Technical Scrutiny Committee has approved the project’s estimated cost of ₹73.42 crore, following which the Municipal Commissioner granted administrative clearance.

The Standing Committee has now approved the proposal to undertake the financial commitment under the provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act.

Funding to Be Released in Phases

Although the project did not have a dedicated budget allocation at the beginning of the current financial year, the PMC has reallocated funds and earmarked ₹2.6 crore as the initial provision. This allocation had already received approval from both the Standing Committee and the General Body.

The remaining project cost will be provided in phases during the 2026–27 and 2027–28 financial years.

Tender Process to Begin After Final Approval

Once the General Body grants its final approval, the PMC will initiate the tendering process. Civic officials estimate that, excluding the monsoon period, construction of the flyover can be completed in approximately 18 months.

The project is expected to improve connectivity between Shivajinagar, the Pune Peth areas, and the Old Pune–Mumbai Highway, while significantly reducing traffic pressure on the Wakdewadi underpass.
