Pune, July 31, 2025: In a renewed crackdown on illegal construction in Pune’s Kondhwa area, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appointed 40 engineers specifically to identify, act against, and file criminal cases related to unauthorised buildings. The drive began today with immediate action — slabs of a four-storey building in Malik Nagar and a three-storey structure in Saibaba Nagar were cut and rendered uninhabitable.

Over the past few years, Kondhwa has witnessed a surge in illegal multi-storey buildings, often erected on plots as small as one guntha (roughly 1,000 sq ft). Violating nearly all construction norms, these unauthorized structures have severely strained local infrastructure, leading to congested roads, irregular water supply, and unsafe, exposed power cables — turning the locality into an urban slum-like zone.

Despite previous PMC action around four years ago, where buildings were demolished and cases filed against developers, the construction of illegal structures resumed once the campaign was halted.

Taking serious note once again, the City Engineer’s Department of PMC has mobilized a special task force of 40 engineers to take decisive action. On the first day of the operation, slabs of RCC buildings in Malik Nagar and Saibaba Nagar were cut using concrete cutters, effectively rendering the buildings unusable. Officials stated that if anyone attempts to reconstruct the slabs, the entire structure would need to be razed again.

The civic body has warned potential buyers against purchasing or occupying such unsafe and illegal properties, stressing that they pose a serious safety threat.
