In a bid to curb unauthorised water usage and ensure equitable distribution of resources, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has cut off 330 illegal water connections across the city in 2024.

According to the PMC water supply department, many of the offenders were from Baner and Balewadi areas. The irregularities were detected due to discrepancies in meters installed to monitor water supply.

Most of the unauthorised connections were found at illegal construction sites. “We usually detect these connections when there are complaints of poor water supply in neighbouring areas or after receiving reports of water leakage,” said an official.

As part of the drive, the civic body has also regularised 31 water connections after their owners paid the requisite fine. In a move to simplify the process for residents to get new water connections, the PMC has reduced the number of required documents.

The crackdown on illegal water connections is part of the PMC’s efforts to streamline water distribution and prevent unauthorised usage. The civic body has been working to improve the water supply infrastructure and ensure that residents receive their fair share of water.
