In a bid to ensure smooth traffic flow and pedestrian safety, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a comprehensive audit of 757 km of roads to detect encroachments, electrical poles, distribution panels, and unauthorized constructions.

The move comes after a survey revealed that 650 km of roads are occupied by illegal hawkers and unauthorized constructions, causing traffic congestion and safety hazards. The PMC celebrated “Footpath Day” on Tuesday, but residents expressed frustration over the civic body’s inaction against road encroachments and unauthorized hawkers.

Rajendra Bhosale, Pune Municipal Commissioner, assured that the PMC will clear all roads of encroachments and conduct an audit of illegal occupation on priority. “We will form flying squads of road and anti-encroachment departments to inspect roads, identify ‘No Hawking Zones,’ and take strict action against violators,” he said while talking to the media.

Citizen rights activists have welcomed the move but expressed skepticism about the implementation. Jaymala Dhankikar, NIBM Annexe Forum director, while speaking with Pune Pulse emphasized the need for citizens to work together with the PMC to make the city pedestrian-friendly and livable. She also told that she has attended all the meetings with PMC and will be joining with pmc in this initiative.

The PMC’s initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and pedestrian infrastructure in the city. With the audit and subsequent action against encroachments, the civic body aims to ensure a safe and smooth commute for citizens.
