Pune, September 9, 2025 — The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a plan to set up designated feeding zones for stray dogs across the city, following directives from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). The move aims to address ongoing disputes between animal feeders and residents while ensuring both animal welfare and citizen safety.

PMC veterinary officials confirmed that a Google form has been circulated to volunteers who regularly feed strays, seeking details about the number of dogs, their vaccination and sterilisation status, and the type of food provided. Based on this data, PMC will identify specific feeding locations so that the activity does not inconvenience other residents.

Currently, a few spots have been identified in Hadapsar, Wadgaonsheri, NIBM, and Wanowrie. The designated areas will not include roads, gardens, or building entrances, but will be located in neutral spaces agreed upon by local committees. These committees will comprise PMC officials, SPCA members, housing society representatives, police, and feeders.

While some housing society members welcomed the decision, citing safety concerns for children and elderly residents, animal lovers expressed relief, saying proper feeding zones would help streamline care, vaccination, and sterilisation efforts.

Officials added that feeders will also be involved in maintaining hygiene and supporting sterilisation drives, ensuring a structured approach to stray dog management across Pune.
