Pune, October 8, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued strict orders to all civic departments and contractors, warning that any unauthorized road digging before the upcoming Grand Challenge Cycle Competition will attract a fine ten times the repair cost. The decision comes as the city prepares to host a prestigious national-level cycling event that will feature participation from Indian and international athletes.

Civic Body Acts to Protect Repaired Roads

PMC officials stated that the move aims to prevent last-minute damage to roads that have been recently repaired and resurfaced. In the past, uncoordinated excavation work by departments handling water pipelines, drainage, and cable networks has caused uneven roads and safety issues. To avoid a repeat, the civic body has decided to impose heavy penalties on any department violating the directive.

PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has instructed all ward offices to carry out joint inspections and maintain close coordination with event organizers to ensure that all cycling routes remain in perfect condition. In addition to fines, departments responsible for violations may also face administrative action.

Event Routes Under Final Touches

The Grand Challenge Cycle Competition, scheduled later this month, will span key areas including Aundh, Baner, Balewadi, and Shivajinagar. PMC’s Road Department has already begun patchwork, resurfacing, and lane-marking along the designated routes.

Coordination meetings are also underway with the Traffic Police, PMPML, and Smart City officials to ensure that no fresh roadwork or digging takes place until the conclusion of the event.
