Pune, July 7, 2025: Residents of Kalyani Nagar have raised serious concerns over civic apathy as a stretch near Bounty Sizzlers, North Avenue, close to Landmark Garden Society, has become a hotspot for mosquitoes and a potential health hazard.
According to Monica Sharma, a local resident who shared visuals of the area, a large pothole near the U-turn has been left unattended for months. The uneven road surface and lack of proper leveling have made it impossible to repair the pothole effectively.
Adding to the problem, waste from drainage cleaning has been left exposed on the roadside. The stagnant water, mixed with sludge and garbage, is emanating a foul smell and attracting pests. With the monsoon season underway, this negligence has created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.
“Last year, several residents, including young children, fell victim to mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya. Despite repeated complaints, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has failed to address the issue,” residents said.
Residents’ Demands:
- Immediate filling of the pothole and proper leveling of the road.
- Removal of drainage waste and sanitation of the area.
- Regular fumigation and mosquito control drives.
- Long-term preventive measures rather than reactive action.
Locals warned that ignoring such basic civic responsibilities is not only poor governance but also endangers public health. They urge PMC to act swiftly before the situation escalates further.
“Kalyani Nagar is steadily becoming a hotspot for mosquito breeding, not just at one or two locations, but across multiple neglected stretches. The area near Bounty Sizzlers is a glaring example, where a pothole filled with filthy, stagnant water has been left untreated for months. This is not just an infrastructure failure — it’s a public health emergency in the making. With monsoon rains now intensifying the issue, the risk of diseases like dengue and chikungunya is rising again. We urge PMC to stop treating this as routine maintenance and recognize the urgency. Residents deserve clean, safe surroundings — not excuses, ” complained Aaditya Patil, Local Resident, Kalyani Nagar.
Yasmin Charania, another resident of Kalyani Nagar stated, “The stagnant water issue is an every year thing here in Kalyani Nagar. This causes a huge mosquito menace throughout the monsoon season. Last year there was a literal epidemic of Chikungunya and Dengue cases in our neighborhood. Just my small society had more than 20-25 cases of Chikungunya. It is the PMC’s job to ensure they fill up holes, make sure no water stagnates anywhere and do pest control in public areas. This is an every year issue but we do not get any proactive solutions for this health crisis. Does PMC expect us to keep posting every pothole and stagnant water issue on the complaints portal for them to action? Can’t they just do their jobs without expecting us to intervene for every single issue?”
