Pune, September 16, 2025: Pune’s public transport system is preparing for a major transformation as double-decker electric buses returned to the city roads for a week-long trial run. The test ride was conducted under the leadership of PMPML CMD Pankaj Deore, along with officials from Switch Mobility and other PMPML representatives.

The trial run will continue for the next 15 days on select routes including Hinjawadi Phase 3 to Hinjawadi Phase 3, Ramwadi Metro to International Park Kharadi, Kalyaninagar Metro to Magarpatta City, and Pune Station to Lohegaon Airport via Vimannagar. The routes cover distances between 8 km and 15.5 km, giving officials an opportunity to evaluate efficiency and passenger experience.

When asked if these buses would also be launched in merged villages he stated that the request can be considered too. PMPML also runs buses on the outskirts of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Measuring 4.75 meters in height, 2.6 meters in width, and 9.5 meters in length, these electric double-deckers are expected to ease congestion and improve the travel experience, especially on busy city routes. A total of ten such buses are planned to be inducted in the first phase into the PMPML fleet.

Officials confirmed that if trials prove successful, the buses will be officially launched around Diwali, marking the return of double-decker buses to Pune after decades. With a strong focus on eco-friendly transport, the project aims to reduce pollution, provide modern commuting solutions, and revive the city’s nostalgic connection with double-deckers.
