Pune: PMPML Launches Training Program For 3,000 Drivers To Tackle Traffic Violations, Focus On Mental Health
In a bid to improve road safety and reduce traffic violations, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has decided to provide training to all its drivers. This move comes after at least 877 drivers received challans worth ₹9.91 lakh for traffic offences between January and November 2024.
The training will be conducted by experts and counsellors at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) and will focus on both direct PMPML employees and those of private contractors. The sessions will cover various aspects, including traffic rules, mental health, and technical aspects of vehicles.
Nitin Narvekar, PMPML’s joint managing director stated while talking to the media person that, the training is essential to update drivers on changing rules and regulations. “Their mental health is always a matter of concern and a major reason for road rage. We want commuters to feel safe when our drivers are on the road,” he added.
IDTR Pune will teach them regulations, how to expect the unexpected, how to judge blind spots, and the constantly changing technology in vehicles. Also, counsellors to assess their mental state.
The training is also a response to the recent Kurla BEST bus accident, which claimed seven lives and left many injured. Officials stated that numerous complaints about drivers talking on phones while driving, speeding, or jumping signals indicate a need for improved training and monitoring.
The training sessions are expected to benefit around 3,000 drivers working for PMPML. With this initiative, the transport body aims to reduce traffic violations and improve road safety in Pune.
