The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) witnessed a significant revenue boost on the first day of its revised fare structure, earning ₹1.97 crore on Sunday—₹55 lakh more than its average daily collection. This spike in income came despite the day’s limited bus operations and traditionally lower weekend footfall.

According to PMPML officials, only 1,554 buses were deployed on various routes out of the total 2,600-strong fleet, as approximately 1,000 scheduled buses were not operational. Despite this, nearly 9.45 lakh commuters used the service, signaling strong public response to the fare hike. PMPML’s average daily revenue stands around ₹1.42 crore, making Sunday’s gain of ₹55 lakh (₹5,502,199) especially notable.

“This is certainly a positive development,” said Satish Gavhane, Chief Manager of PMPML’s Operations Department. “The response from commuters suggests they are willing to pay more if the quality of service improves. We now aim to enhance reliability, cleanliness, and punctuality across our services.”

The fare hike marks the first in recent years, with the minimum ticket price now ₹10 for journeys up to five kilometres. The change is aimed at strengthening PMPML’s financial health and enabling long-overdue improvements in infrastructure and fleet management.

PMPML operates buses across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding suburbs. With the added revenue, officials say a roadmap for service upgrades is underway, and further monitoring of commuter feedback will shape future decisions.
